A McLean, Virginia, landscape designer was completely upgrading the landscape and exterior living area. They were designing an exterior porch and lower terrace area. The designer designed the area to accommodate a spiral staircase. The railing design was to coordinate between all areas of the terrace and stairs, and the spiral stairs needed lighting to traverse the stairs in the dark.
We designed the spiral stair in solid aluminum, including all the treads, risers, and the center pole. The outside of the treads was wrapped with a skirt to eliminate the cookie-cutter spiral visual. The aesthetics were further enhanced by adding dimensional trim pieces on top and bottom of the skirt. We resolved the lighting issue by pre-drilling all the required mounting holes, pre-determining all wiring paths, and ensuring the wiring paths were in place on the underside of the treads and down through the center pole. This allowed the electrician to easily install and hook up all the lights.
This spiral stair and terrace railing were done in traditional design with knuckles for design elements and done in black powder-coat, had the visual of a wrought iron staircase and wrought iron railing, but will not have any corrosion issues associated with Wrought Iron. This Washington, DC project will provide the clients with many hours of relaxation and enjoyment in their exterior living space.
