We were contacted by a client in Philadelphia about some historic balcony railings and historic terrace railings. The original wrought iron railings were around 100 years old and some were in a pretty bad state of neglect. The main challenge was that the original balconies had been originally mounted to the wood structure and then 2 rows of brick were laid in front, so the mountings were totally inaccessible.

Historic Restoration Gallery

The elements of rain, salt and sun can be devastating to a beautifully crafted project, even if created by past Philadelphia artist black smith Samuel Yellin or another famous artist, Edgar Brandt. While their work still adorns home on the East Coast and beyond, maintaining the beautiful Iron fence, driveway gates and terrace railing can be a significant challenge.

Typically, it is impossible to restore finish integrity while the project is in place. Here at Compass we provide thought leadership into proper removal techniques, correct stripping procedures and the best finishing specifications. And last, but not least the correct approach of reinstalling the classic railing design, property fence or driveway gate into its authentic setting.

While doing a Ironworks Historic restoration project can be daunting, especially if the project was in a state of neglect, the rewards of having given a new lease on life to a phenomenal project is always truly rewarding.
