A client in New York who was undergoing a renovation reached out to us for a project they wanted completed. It was an interior wrought iron railing. The inspiration for the iron railing design was for a custom oval railing design suspended vertically by horizontal rectangular bar members. It was on an additional vertical ½ “square bar member.

We also added additional ½” vertical members that protruded from both the top and the bottom of the ovals. They feature the detail of brass balls on the ends.

We provided a budget for the entire interior iron railing design. This included level sections and a short stair section. After the client reviewed the budget for the iron railing, they came back to us to see if any cost savings could be realized. Their new idea was to simplify the short stair railing section. We easily accommodated this change.

The iron railing design was created with a 2 ¼” cap rail, a 1 ½” by ½” bar channel, and  1 ½” square posts. This rail also featured ½” square solid vertical pickets and ovals. The brass balls were 1 3/6” diameter. The horizontal connections were ½” X 1” flat bar.

The sequence for creating this iron railing design was to create the ovals first. We did this by forming 180° bends around a 3 ½” mandrel. They were a specified distance apart to create an oval the correct length. Then, we trimmed the excess ½” square bar material. Before we welded the ovals shut, we slipped the horizontal connectors over the ½” square bar. Next, we ground and sanded them smooth.

To finish it off, we welded the iron railing design together. We assembled the oval connectors by utilizing the TIG welding method for less cleanup and a better visual at the joint.

This iron railing design was featured in one of our blogs recently on the trend of luxury iron railing designs. Complete with its powder-coated black finish and the contrast of the brass balls, this transitional iron railing design absolutely enhances the interior design of this New York home. It will now be able to make a design statement for many years to come.

We love our front porch railings! They certainly add a lot of beauty to our home and they fit the period of our home. When elderly guests come to visit, it’s always good that they have something strong to hold onto, and they fit perfectly what we were looking for. Thanks to everyone on your team for their artistic work. We are very happy with our final products!

Compass delivered absolutely amazing, high quality product. They are true masters.  I am also pleased with their timely communication and guidance, as we worked through the design and transaction process.

What an excellent experience we had with Compass Ironworks!! We have spent four years restoring and remodeling a Pre-Civil War home in North Alabama. We have learned a lot through the process and made more than a few mistakes. But choosing Compass Ironworks was not one of those. From the very first interaction, Amos and his team have been a pleasure to work with. Old homes are quirky! No right angles. No two measurements are precisely the same. So using a company in Pennsylvania was a risk. And we are SO GLAD we took that risk! Absolutely flawless!! The designs, the collaboration, the execution, the QUALITY, the timeline and the finished product were all first class!!! We will absolutely choose Compass again for our next project and recommend them to anyone who asks.

The railing is installed and is beautiful … a work of art, to be sure!

My expectations were high and certainly met. I was able to visit the shop and see the railing in progress. It was a thrill to see it then, and very exciting when it arrived at my home.

I have already recommended you to others!
